During long-term operation, excessive winding temperature can accelerate the aging of insulation materials and may even lead to insulation breakdown and equipment failure. Therefore, real-time temperature monitoring, alarm functions, and protective control systems are essential to ensure the safe and stable operation of transformers.

1. Over-Temperature Alarm and Trip Protection Function

By installing PTC nonlinear thermistors embedded inside the low-voltage winding, the temperature variations of the transformer windings and core can be continuously monitored.

During transformer operation, if the winding temperature continues to rise:

When the winding temperature reaches 155°C, the temperature control system will automatically issue an over-temperature alarm signal, notifying operators to check the operating condition of the transformer in time.

When the temperature further increases to 170°C, it indicates that the transformer can no longer operate safely under current conditions. The system will send an over-temperature trip signal to the secondary protection circuit, causing the transformer to quickly disconnect from the power supply to prevent insulation damage or equipment failure caused by overheating.

This protection function effectively reduces operational risks caused by abnormal temperature rise and improves the overall reliability of the transformer.

2. Automatic Cooling Fan Control Function

By using Pt100 platinum resistance temperature sensors installed at the hottest points of the low-voltage windings, the system can accurately detect winding temperature changes and automatically control the operation of cooling fans according to the actual temperature condition.

When the transformer load increases and the winding temperature rises to 110°C, the temperature control system automatically starts the cooling fans to enhance heat dissipation.

When the winding temperature drops below 90°C, the system automatically stops the fans, reducing energy consumption and extending the service life of the cooling equipment.

The automatic cooling control system intelligently adjusts the heat dissipation capacity according to the transformer’s operating conditions, ensuring that the transformer remains within a safe operating temperature range while improving operational efficiency.

3. Temperature Display and Remote Monitoring System

Through Pt100 temperature sensors embedded in the low-voltage windings, the temperature control system can continuously collect real-time temperature data of the transformer windings and display the information through the monitoring terminal.

The system provides the following functions:

Real-time display of temperatures for three-phase windings (A, B, and C phases);

Automatic recording of the highest temperature reached during operation;

Storage and review of maximum temperature records for operation analysis and maintenance;

Output of temperature signals through a 4–20mA analog interface for integration with remote monitoring systems.

For applications requiring long-distance monitoring, a computer communication interface can be added to enable data transmission over distances of up to approximately 1200 meters. With an additional temperature transmitter, one monitoring system can simultaneously monitor up to 31 transformers.

Furthermore, the over-temperature alarm and trip protection functions can also be activated through signals from Pt100 temperature sensors, further improving the accuracy, stability, and reliability of the transformer temperature protection system.

Temperature Monitoring and Protection Methods for Ensuring Safe Operation of Power Transformers The safe operation performance and service life of dry-type test transformers largely depend on the reliability of the winding insulation system.
