In reality, a transformer cabinet, feeder pillar, RMU housing or control kiosk is part of the protection system for the equipment inside it. Its performance affects electrical safety, insulation condition, corrosion resistance, maintainability and the likelihood of passing site acceptance without costly corrective work.

A low quotation is not automatically a poor quotation. The concern arises when the technical specification leaves important details open to interpretation. Two cabinets can have the same external dimensions and a similar finish, yet differ greatly in steel thickness, frame construction, welding quality, sealing materials and inspection discipline. The following eight checks help purchasers convert those hidden variables into clear, auditable requirements.

1. Specify the minimum finished steel thickness

Nominal sheet thickness alone is not enough. State the minimum acceptable thickness after any permitted manufacturing tolerance, and identify where that requirement applies: doors, side panels, roof, base plate and structural members. Thin panels can oil-can during handling, doors may lose alignment, and a distorted joint can compromise an otherwise good weather seal. For critical outdoor cabinets, include thickness measurement as an incoming or pre-shipment inspection point.

2. Define materials for the complete load path

Material requirements should cover more than visible panels. The internal frame, lifting points, base channels, door reinforcements, hinges, fasteners and mounting brackets may carry the highest mechanical or corrosion duty. If stainless steel is specified, identify the required grade and the components to which it applies. If coated carbon steel is acceptable, define the grade and corrosion-protection system for concealed parts as well as exposed surfaces. Material certificates should be available when the project specification requires traceability.

3. Match the surface-treatment system to the substrate and environment

Coating quality starts before paint is applied. For carbon-steel enclosures, the specified cleaning and conversion treatment should be compatible with the chosen coating system. For stainless-steel fabrications, weld areas normally require proper cleaning and, where specified, pickling and passivation to restore corrosion resistance. Avoid generic statements such as “anti-rust treatment”; specify the environment, coating system, preparation standard, dry-film thickness and any salt-spray or adhesion requirement relevant to the project.

4. Treat welds as weatherproofing details

Welds, seams and cut edges are common starting points for corrosion and water ingress. The design should identify locations requiring continuous sealing welds and locations where intermittent structural welding is acceptable. Weld spatter, sharp edges and unsealed overlaps should be removed before coating. For outdoor stainless-steel cabinets, the condition of welds and post-weld cleaning should be included in visual inspection criteria. A smooth appearance on large panels does not prove that the enclosure joints are durable.

5. Specify the sealing system, not only the IP rating

An IP rating is a system result, not a label. Door geometry, compression force, gasket profile, cable-entry arrangement, roof joints and drainage all contribute to the final protection level. EPDM is commonly selected for outdoor gaskets because of its resistance to weathering, ozone and temperature cycling, but the gasket type must suit the enclosure design and service conditions. Ask for a defined gasket material, continuous sealing path, suitable compression and an inspection method for door closure and gaps.

6. Control the dry-film thickness and coverage

Powder coating or liquid paint should be specified by a measurable dry-film thickness range, not by colour alone. Insufficient thickness reduces the barrier against moisture, ultraviolet exposure and abrasion; excessive thickness can also lead to poor edge coverage or curing defects. Require coating measurements at representative locations, including edges, welds and difficult-to-coat corners. The acceptance criteria should also address pinholes, runs, bare metal, poor adhesion and damage caused during transport or assembly.

7. Review drainage, condensation control and service access

Water management must be designed into the enclosure. A sloped or overhanging roof, drip edges, raised plinths, properly arranged cable entries and protected ventilation paths reduce the chance of standing water entering the cabinet. Where temperature swings or humidity can produce condensation, consider pressure-equalisation devices, anti-condensation heaters, suitable drainage and correctly positioned vents, subject to the required IP class. At the same time, technicians need safe access to doors, lifting points, earthing terminals and maintenance items without damaging seals.

8. Require a documented factory acceptance process

Before shipment, the supplier should assemble the enclosure sufficiently to verify door fit, hole positions, locks, hinges, gland plates, internal mounting arrangements and supplied accessories. For projects with a defined ingress-protection requirement, agree in advance whether verification will be by design review, routine checks, witness inspection or a formal test to the applicable standard. Pre-shipment photographs, dimensional records, coating readings and an inspection report create a useful handover record and reduce site modifications that could damage the protective finish.

The practical purchasing principle

The most effective approach is to evaluate outdoor enclosures on lifecycle performance rather than initial appearance. A well-written technical specification should state the application, installation environment, material system, corrosion category where applicable, enclosure protection class, coating requirements, mechanical features and factory inspection deliverables. These requirements give suppliers a common basis for quotation and allow the buyer to compare offers fairly.

For transformer and power-distribution projects, a properly specified enclosure protects the equipment investment behind the door. It also reduces avoidable delays during installation, commissioning and final acceptance. When details are clear from the beginning, the project team can focus on reliable operation instead of correcting preventable enclosure issues on site.

Electrical Enclosures for Outdoor Power Systems Eight specification checks that protect project cost, reliability and site acceptance Outdoor electrical enclosures are often treated as a simple metalwork purchase.
